Hero, in his Spiritalia,' illustrates and describes a double cylinder fire engine with two brass force pumps connected to one discharge pipe. The cylinders are secured to a base of described wood, and are partly immersed in water. In the text they are as turned or bored very smooth, and the pistons accurately fitted to work in them. The piston rods are attached by bolts to a double lever at equal distances from the centre or fulcrum
